EC’s BEST OF 3
THE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
WHY I LIKE IT: Complete classic, the epitome of the mystery and crime novel. Sherlock Holmes – whilst no doubt old fashioned – is the ultimate character. He’s suave, clever, strong, yet flawed. I love everything about these stories and have read them over and over. The relationship between Watson and Holmes is not only vital, but strengthens them both as characters. One without the other would be much less interesting to read. I cannot recommend these stories enough for anyone who loves to read crime novels.
THE LOGAN MCRAE NOVELS by Stuart MacBride
WHY I LIKE THEM: Set in Aberdeen, these stories contain all kinds of gritty crimes – murders and serial killers with a healthy dose of humour injected along the way to take the sting out of the crimes. The author mixes police procedures and forensics with great stories and characters. It can get a bit graphic in places but I love that personally, it’s a crime novel and crimes by their very nature can be graphic.
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS by Agatha Christie
WHY I LIKE IT: Come on?! This is pure, unadulterated mystery. Hercule Poirot is the ultimate detective (I’m torn between adoring him or Sherlock Holmes more – though I think Holmes has the edge) and this is by far one of the best of the Christie novels. Full of suspense and intrigue, danger and misdirection. The reader is drawn in and the story unravelled in such a skilful way that you can’t help but be hooked.
