All About Corporal Ronan Hale
When I first wrote Corporal Ronan Hale, he was a side character in novella 2 of The Fall series, Haven. He was not meant to be a big character. In fact, in my original outline, he was not only a straightforward bad guy, he died … and he deserved it!
So imagine my surprise when Ronan took on a life of his own, literally. As I was writing the novella, I discovered he was NOT a bad guy, but an inside man in the making.
Also, response to Ronan was off the charts.
Lots of readers dropped into my DMs, especially on instagram, telling me they loved him as a ‘book boyfriend’! They said they wanted to see more from him in the series.
In Haven, Ronan ends up instrumental in protagonist Elise’s escape. (Not a spoiler, check out the cover of novella 3, Renegade!). This made me think about why he would do such a thing, plus what he could do next.
But first, let’s have a giggle and look at why Ronan is THE WORST … here goes!
1) He works in the government’s shady Haven system
In the post-apocalyptic world of The Fall, the government is trying to reboot humanity. Unfortunately, they’re not giving women any say in the matter (remind you of anyone??).
Yes, Ronan is undercover in the Haven, but he still wears their uniform, carries their gun and helps keep their brutal system running. Like so many men in the real world, he has to decide to make a stand.
2) He stands by while women are trafficked
Yes, Ronan helps Elise – eventually. He receives the prisoners delivered by Raider packs, averts his eyes and continues playing the obedient guard. He does this for YEARS, turning his face away from the injustice. Ack.
3) He is a massive hypocrite!
Ronan decides to become an inside man, but he’s still a hypocrite. He condemns the men abducting women for the Haven while knowing he’s also deceiving, controlling and using people for his own mission. Wow.
4) He sends soldiers after Elise
WTAF? He secretly celebrates her escape, then orders an armed pursuit to protect his cover. Romantic!
5) He’s protected by Action Hero Logic™
Apparently, being tall, armed, American and tortured by his conscience cancels out everything he does in uniform. It does not. Seriously!
Would I trust a man who celebrated my escape before sending literal armed soldiers after me???
Hell no! I’d require his mission orders, extraction plan and a full list of everyone he had lied to.
Would I let Corporal Ronan Hale point a gun at the bad guys and tell me to stay behind him? ALSO YES.

The world ended. The fight for survival didn’t.
In THE FALL, 99% of women and girls are dead. Now a group of survivors must build a life from the wreckage while facing the people who’d rather take it from them.
If you like dystopian thrillers with found family, impossible choices and danger around every corner, this series is for you.
