Why We’re Obsessed With Morally Grey Characters: 10 Reasons Readers Can’t Resist Them

Why We Love Morally Grey Characters

Morally grey characters are everywhere right now, in every genre. From romance and romantasy, through to thriller, horror, crime and mystery, these types are everywhere.

In recent years, such characters have become some of the most beloved figures in fiction. Entire online communities spend years arguing about them. Defending them. Creating fan art. Writing fan fiction.

So why are we so drawn to people who lie, manipulate, break rules and make terrible decisions? Let’s go …

    1) They Feel More Real Than Perfect Heroes

Few people wake up in the morning knowing what that fabled ‘right thing’ is. Real life is messy. People make mistakes and compromises they regret later. They justify their dubious decisions. They fail outright.

Morally grey characters reflect this reality. Their flaws make them believable … and it’s something readers love. Not because they condone the terrible things morally grey characters do, either!

    2) They Let Us Explore Our Own Dark Side Safely

Most readers probably aren’t secretly planning world domination. (Though speak for yourself, because I am – arf!).

But most of us have experienced the unfair parts of life. We’ve been betrayed, let down or abandoned. We may have indulged in jealousy, resentment, anger, moral compromises or even revenge fantasies.

These characters allow us to explore those emotions safely through fiction. They act on impulses most of us never would. That’s part of the appeal.

    3) They’re Unpredictable

Perfect heroes can become predictable, but morally grey characters keep us guessing.

Will they save someone? Betray someone? Do the right thing? Choose themselves?

The uncertainty creates tension and conflict. It’s these two things that keep us turning pages.

    4) They Usually Have The Best Backstories

These characters have the best backstories because literally no one becomes emotionally damaged, morally complicated and slightly unhinged by accident.

Such characters often carry things readers recognise from their own lives. Trauma, loss, guilt, regret, betrayal – many of us have experienced them in our own lives.

These elements create layers and nuance. But they also spark curiosity: WHY is this character behaving this way? We love peeling them back, because we want to know what happened. We want to understand.

    5) Their Love Feels More Earned

Morally grey characters are frequently slow to love … which means when they fall, they fall HARD.

This is especially true in romantasy. Seeing a guarded, damaged person become vulnerable is incredibly satisfying.

    6) They Make Us Question Our Own Morals

Morally grey characters often start on the ‘wrong’ side … or even stay there. It’s possible to disagree with the choices a morally grey character makes and STILL think, ‘I see how they got there.’

Other times, that character may do something objectively terrible and we DO agree with them (if not their methods)!

Morally grey characters challenge our assumptions about right and wrong. That’s part of the fun.

    7) They Often Have Fierce Loyalty

Many readers don’t actually want morally grey characters … They want loyal morally grey characters.

There’s a difference. The appeal isn’t usually cruelty, but devotion.

Whether it’s friendship, family or romance, these characters often protect their chosen people with terrifying intensity. That’s absolute catnip for readers.

    8) They Reflect The World We Live In

Most sensible adults eventually realise that real life is NOT black and white. What’s more, people aren’t easily sorted into heroes and villains.

After all, good people sometimes do bad things. Bad people sometimes do good things.

Most of us live somewhere in the middle. Morally grey characters reflect that uncomfortable reality.

    9) They Give Us Hope

This might seem strange at first glance, but I’d venture many morally grey stories are deeply optimistic.

Why? Because they suggest people can CHANGE. They can learn and become better.  Readers love redemption arcs because they tap into a hopeful idea:

Our worst mistakes don’t have to define us forever.

    10) They’re Just More Interesting!

Sometimes the top answer is the simplest one: morally grey characters are FASCINATING.

Their very state of being creates conflict, emotion, debate. Years after finishing a book, readers may forget the flawless hero … But they’ll still be arguing about the morally grey disaster.

Why Women In Particular Love Morally Grey Protectors

One thing I find fascinating is how many female readers are drawn to grey protector characters. The Xadens, Rhysands, Starks, or whoever your personal fave is.

These are the men who would happily burn the world down for the people they love. Critics often focus on the danger, yet readers often focus on the support.

Women are not ‘stupid’ or don’t know any better. Hell, most of us probably wouldn’t want a genuinely morally grey man in our lives! That doesn’t stop us from enjoying them in fiction.

Instead, think logically about the appeal. Many women spend huge amounts of time carrying emotional labour in everyday life. They may manage the family, looking after children or elderly relatives as the primary carer. They may organise entire households, anticipating everyone else’s needs. All too often, women put themselves last.

The fantasy isn’t necessarily the six-foot-four warrior with shadow powers. The fantasy is a partner who isn’t another problem to solve. Someone who notices the burden and helps carry it. Someone who chooses you, protects you, supports you.

That’s a very different fantasy from the one this genre’s critics often imagine.

    Final Thoughts

Perhaps that’s why morally grey characters remain so popular … they’re flawed, complicated, messy, contradictory. You know, like real life! So maybe that’s why readers keep falling in love with morally grey characters? NOT because they’re perfect … but because they are not.

What do YOU like best about morally grey characters from this list?

    Want MORE Morally Grey Characters?

My series of dystopian novellas, The Fall is for you!

99% of women and girls are dead. This is the story of the 1%.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Devon not so long from now, a mysterious virus has killed most of the female population. Now the lucky ones that are left have retreated behind fortified enclaves. The not-so-lucky ones are hunted by feral packs of airborne Raiders, who sell them back to the government who will stop at nothing to reboot humanity.

If you enjoy The Hunger Games, Silo or Fallout … you’ll love The Fall. Even better, each novella is a short, wild ride designed to be read in a single evening.
